Overtime gear oil breaks down and can have water mixing through wheel seals minimizing the protective lubrication properties of the oil. These oils are recomended to be changed at certain mileage and/or time. If the vehicle is often used to haul trailers, boats, go off road in 4wd, these services MUST be done more frequently.
